Taking the ACT test is unavoidable, BUT the ACT test is 100% "beatable." All it take is effort and a little planning.
When should I take the ACT test? If you are an advanced student (an A/B student taking honors or AP classes), I would recommend you take the April or June test of your sophomore year. If not, you can probably wait to take the ACT until October or December of your junior year. Remember, ALL juniors take a FREE ACT test in April. **This should NOT be the first time you take the ACT test though. Seniors should register for the September, October, and/or December tests as most colleges will require application due dates in early to late winter. *The sooner you have your ACT score locked in, the more options you have when applying to schools, especially if you're searching for $$ scholarships. What should I do right now in terms of preparing for college? 1. Make a list of possible schools or programs. Shoot for 1/2 dozen for now. Include your dream school, because, why not?! 2. Have a candid conversation with your parent(s) or guardian(s) about how you are going to pay for post-secondary schooling. Find out what you can and cannot afford. 3. Hit the internet and do some recon. Make a spreadsheet or a simple pro/con list for the schools/programs on your list. If going out of state is important to you, determine what you need to do NOW to make that happen. 4. Be realistic with yourself. What do you like to do? What are your strengths? If you know you need more one-on-one instruction, large universities are probably not for you. You want to major in international studies, but that is not available at your dream school. Now what? 5. Get your grades in order. Like, seriously. It's mathematically impossible to bring 1.8 GPA to a 3.2 during your senior year. Even your junior year. The academic choices you are making RIGHT NOW are determining the options you will have when it comes time to graduate and take that next step. ~ Ms. Kellum |

ACT Test PrepBack when I was in school - 1,000 years ago - there were few options when it came to preparing for the ACT. You could buy a test prep book at the local bookstore or you could use the one that came with the 40 page registration manual. You guys are LUCKY! There are resources galore today, especially with access to the Internet. A Google search will get you more than you could ever use, & there are companies whose job it is to prep students for this test. There's really no excuse for not raising your score.
