English 10 Standard

Picture
English class is a lot like playing a sport. You must practice at it to get better, and you must demonstrate endurance to see it through. You don't hit a home run without ever picking up a baseball bat. Similarly, you won't understand theme unless you analyze the characters, setting, and conflict. The answers are not immediate there like they are in other subjects. And sometimes there isn't even answer! A piece of literature is a little puzzle that you as the reader must figure out with some or a lot or no clues. It's challenging, but oh so rewarding when you figure it out!

In my English class, we will work to become more confident and capable English students. You will leave having a better understanding of literature. You'll be able to write a thesis statement with ease. You'll improve your grammar and vocabulary so that your communication skills are stronger. Beyond that, I hope you discover something about yourself or one of the topics we will study or even life.

Everyone wants to know what we will read (and how long they are), so below is our reading list. I hope you'll keep an open mind and be a willing participant on our journey through 10th grade English!
Of Mice and Men - story of friendship
Julius Caesar - betrayal and power
12 Angry Men - courtroom drama
And Then There Were None - murder mystery
Night - Holocaust survivor story
