The purpose of an honors English class is to dive deeper into literature, language, and composition. You already enter with a strong set of skills from your previous advanced English classes (and if you don't, we will work on that). You tend to like English class more than the average student. And you have a strong work ethic. So, Sophomore English is what I call the "fine tuning" year. This is the last stop on the train before you enter college level English courses; it's your last chance to perfect your English skills.
Your goal this year to learn how to read. I know you can technically read, but this kind of reading is different. This is where you read between the words, sentences, and paragraphs. Using annotations, you look and listen for all of the hidden meaning and the subtleties the author includes in their text. And you ask questions. Lots of questions. Sometimes you find the answer to those questions, and other times, if the author is good, they leave you unsure, which was their goal the whole time. You'll analyze literature with depth. I'll drive you crazy by asking to you prove it, explain it, and show it over and over again. But, if you'll trust me, you'll leave able to tackle just about any piece of text. The ability to communicate well in discussions and essays is important not just for school, but also for life. Employers often cite an employees ability to communicate well as one of the most important factors when hiring. And you'll need to write and speak in just about every profession. Therefore, participation in daily discussions and lectures, as well as within your text, is required. Doing this will help you to be a better reader, too. Another way you'll improve your communication skills is by improving your vocabulary. It's pretty difficult to write an essay with a weak vocabulary. (FYI, the essay will also be really boring.) Lastly, you must solidify your grammar this year. In order to communicate in an advance form, you must have the grammatical knowledge to construct and organize your sentences, i.e. your ideas. There is an art to writing. Grammatical elements allow you to sculpt your writing into a beautiful piece that your audience will admire. We READ so that we can THINK, which allows us to DISCUSS with others and then WRITE about what we LEARNed! |
In Class Reading AssignmentsTo become more competent and capable readers, we will read one selection in class each grading period. This is a chance for you to ask questions, learn from others, and discover techniques to analyze literature.
|
Outside Reading AssignmentsPart of the requirements for Honors English is outside reading. Each 9 weeks, you will have an selection to read. Assignments will accompany each novel, and a test will be given.
